New Jersey Rules 7:12-3 and 7:6-3 permit a defendant in certain cases to enter a plea by certification if the appearance would result in an undue hardship to the defendant. The most obvious reason is that you are an out of state resident or are seriously ill or injured. Not every excuse will suffice, even if you think it's a good one.
